BROADBAND INTERNET PROVISION IN ECCLESFIELD

FIBRE
Fibre optic cables have now been layed in Ecclesfield, and (up to) 40Mbps broadband is now available.

Since the fibre optic cable only reaches to the cabinets placed by the side of the road, an ordinary (copper) telephone wire is still needed to get the signal from the cabinet to the house. As with ADSL, this Fibre To The Cabinet (FTTC) system keeps the wire free for voice calls, but unlike ADSL, it avoids the reduction in broadband speed at increased distances from the Ecclesfield telephone exchange on Nether Lane.

The fibre is provided by the "Digital Region" and therefore requires a subscription from one of their ISP's, which include ...

£75 installation + £25 per month
Ripwire¬
£90 installation + £25 per month
Origin broadband¬

The copper connection can be via a normal BT subscription or via a non-voice, 'Metal path' MPF service at slightly lower cost.

Digital Region is (currently) publically owned and very new. However, until faster mobile broadband arrives, it may be the fastest Internet connection generally available to us.

ADSL
BeThere offer (up to) 24Mbps for £22 a month.

http://speedtest.net/ gives me ping = 38 ms, download =16 Mbps, upload = 1Mbps, at 0.5 miles from Ecclesfield Telephone Exchange¬ (perhaps I should do something about my three filters and bad wiring)
